Performing Arts

A number of performing arts organizations in Mobile and around the region help keep arts lovers entertained. Many of these theaters are community-based organizations that rely on dedicated volunteers and generous contributions to remain in existence.

Saenger Theatre

A vital part of downtown Mobile's recent revitalization, the historical Saenger Theatre Centre for the Living Arts is a lavish venue for film screenings, live drama, and musical performances. The ornate decoration and architectural style was meant to draw on both Greek mythology and classic European opera house design.

Mobile Theatre Guild

The Mobile Theatre Guild places a strong emphasis on intimate productions that make use of the smaller scale of the theater itself. MTG presents comedies, dramas and musicals, and has earned recognition throughout the country as an outstanding regional theatre. The organization originally began in 1949 as an organization promoting arts to teens, and remains committed to fostering arts appreciation in the community.

Mobile Ballet

Two local ballet companies merged in 1987 to form Mobile Ballet. Since then, the ballet has developed into an outstanding regional company. Mobile Ballet holds several performances each season to consistent critical applause. In conjunction with their belief that youth education is essential, the company holds special "Discover Dance" performances especially for students on the morning of every show. All performances are held at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.

Mobile Civic Center

The 400,000 square foot Civic Center hosts three separate facilities; Arena, Theater, and Exposition Hall; all under one roof. The building is in almost continuous use, serving as the setting for conventions, trade shows, rock concerts and Broadway musicals. It's not uncommon for two different events to occur in the building at the same exact time. Located in Mobile's historic downtown, the Civic Center is within walking distance of the city's most celebrated hotels and restaurants.

Chickasaw Civic Theatre

A staple of the Chickasaw community since 1966, the Civic Theatre produces several popular plays and family-oriented productions each year. The theatre runs as a non-profit, and relies in part on donations from its patrons. The theatre often features up-and coming young actors and actress from around the area.

South Baldwin Community Theatre

The members of the SBCT group are normal everyday citizens of the Alabama Gulf Coast who devote their energy and free time to entertaining audiences throughout the area. The talent of friends and neighbors is on display during the theatre's season of plays and musicals, which runs from fall to spring.
